Etymology
History
Bruellanic tribes and early empires
Evidence of the first settlement of the area by Bruellanic tribes is found to be dating back to 50 BCE. Early settlements have been found in the Rhine lowlands, they included tools and housing, along with various bones of animals and humans.
Holy Kingdom of the Rhine
The first recognised Bruellan nation was the Holy Kingdom of the Rhine, formed in 540 CE, after the defeat of the Calibrian Empire in the Battle of Althoch. The Kingdom was centered around the lower Rhine basin, with a political centre in Tuebingen, near modern day Mainz. The Kingdom was plagued by internal rivalries and disputes between members of the leadership. At its greatest extent, the Kingdom held the entire lower Rhine basin, as well as the mountain bishoprics of Esslingen and Rothernburg ob der Tauen.
In 800 CE, rivalries within the Kingdom came to a head when Rodrick of Esslingen murdered King Ozil II, and acceded to the throne. Rodrick moved the capital from Tuebingen to his home town of Esslingen and placed local nobles to positions in the Kingdom.
The Kingdom is said to officially ended when, in 1000 CE, Rodrick's third son, Adalbehrt, acceded to the throne as King of Esslingen, effectively abolishing the former title. The Kingdom was further ended when the former powerhouse of Tuebingen was captured by Northern tribes in 1010 CE.
